Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your site so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude — cite you when someone asks a question your product answers. It is not a rebranding of SEO. Ranking #1 on Google and being named in an AI answer are two different outcomes, driven by two different selection processes, and you can absolutely have one without the other.
That gap is the whole opportunity. Only about 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity — which means most of your competitors have optimized for one surface and are invisible on the others.
When someone searches “best WooCommerce product feed plugin,” they used to get ten blue links and pick one. Now they increasingly get a single paragraph naming three products. If your plugin isn’t one of the three, you didn’t lose a ranking position — you were never in the consideration set at all.
For a plugin or micro-SaaS business, that’s existential in a way it isn’t for a news site. Your buyers ask comparison questions, and comparison questions are exactly what AI engines answer most confidently.
Most GEO advice is recycled SEO advice with new vocabulary. Here’s what genuinely changes AI citation behaviour, in rough order of impact:
Most sites see measurable movement in AI citation frequency within 4–8 weeks of proper GEO work — faster on Perplexity and AI Overviews, which pull live data, and slower on ChatGPT, which depends on Bing’s crawl cycle.
What GEO will not do is replace your traffic. AI platforms currently send roughly 0.3% of all web traffic. Being cited by ChatGPT is a positioning and credibility win — your name appears where buyers are deciding — not a volume play. Anyone promising you traffic numbers from GEO alone is selling you something.
I’ve spent 8+ years in digital marketing and scaled two WordPress products past $20K/month — CTX Feed from $4K to $23K MRR, and Saasland from $300 to $19K MRR with a 200%+ increase in organic traffic. The GEO advice here comes from running these tests on products I own, not from summarizing other people’s posts.
Start here: grab the free GEO audit checklist — the same one I use on client sites — or look at GEO audit packages and consulting if you’d rather have it done for you.
