Most advice about growing a WordPress plugin is written by people who have never shipped one. This section is the opposite: it’s what worked, what didn’t, and what I’d do differently, drawn from taking CTX Feed from $4K to $23K MRR and Saasland from $300 to $19K.
Discovery. The WordPress.org repository is a search engine with its own ranking rules — install velocity, active installs, ratings, support responsiveness, and readme relevance. Most developers treat the listing as documentation. It’s a landing page, and it’s usually the highest-leverage page you own.
Conversion. Free-to-paid conversion in the plugin world typically lands between 1% and 5%. The gap between those numbers is almost never the feature set. It’s whether the upgrade prompt appears at the moment the user hits the limitation, rather than in a settings tab nobody opens.
Retention. Annual renewals are where plugin businesses quietly die. A plugin with 40% renewal is a treadmill; at 75% it compounds. The difference is usually support response time and whether the product keeps visibly improving.
Practical, operator-level material on each constraint: repository SEO and listing optimization, freemium pricing that converts without cannibalizing, marketing channels ranked by real return rather than by how much people talk about them, churn and refund reduction, and the analytics setup that tells you which of the three constraints is actually binding.
There are also two full case studies with real numbers — the CTX Feed and Saasland growth stories — including the decisions that didn’t work.
Because the discovery problem is changing. Buyers who used to search the repository or Google now ask an AI assistant which plugin to use. The plugin that gets named has an advantage no amount of listing optimization can match. Everything in the GEO section applies directly to a plugin business — this section is what you do with that visibility once you have it.
If you’re building a plugin business: the consulting page explains how I work with plugin and micro-SaaS founders one-on-one, and results has the numbers.
