Do manufactured brand mentions work for AI search?
Not in the way they are sold. Brand mentions do correlate with AI visibility, more strongly than backlinks. But Google says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it looks, because its AI features rely on the same spam systems as the rest of Search. In our data, the vendor that shows up most earned its place with its own content.
Why is this being sold at all?
Because the correlation is real. The study behind our backlinks guide puts unlinked brand mentions at 0.66 and backlinks at 0.22. Once that number spread, a market followed: paid Reddit comments, seeded forum threads, listicle placements and bulk “brand mention” packages. “Buy reddit brand mentions” now shows up in Google autocomplete.
The problem is that a correlation measured on brands that were mentioned naturally says nothing about mentions that were bought. Brands that get talked about also tend to be good, known and linked. Buying the mention does not buy those.
What does Google say?
Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features acknowledges that its AI features can show “what’s being said about products and services across the web”, including blogs, videos and forums. It then says seeking inauthentic mentions “isn’t as helpful as it might seem,” because its ranking systems focus on quality, its other systems block spam, and the AI features depend on both.
In plain terms: the same systems that ignore paid links are the filter a paid mention has to get through before an AI feature ever reads it.
What does our data show?
Two things. First, mentions on third-party platforms clearly matter on Google. In our leaderboard run, Google AI Mode used youtube.com as a source in 13 of 15 answers and Reddit in 7 of 15. So being discussed on those platforms is worth real effort.
Second, the pattern that travels across all three engines is not a mention campaign. FS Code was a source in 18 of 45 answers, in every category and on every engine, and it got there by publishing long comparison articles on its own domains. Vendor-owned domains filled 41% of Perplexity’s source slots and 47% of Google’s in Run 03. The most reliable way we have seen to be read is to publish something worth reading.
| Approach | What it depends on | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Paid or seeded mentions | Getting past spam systems | Google says not helpful |
| Genuine discussion on YouTube and Reddit | Something people want to talk about | 13 and 7 of 15 Google answers |
| Own-domain comparison and data content | Being worth citing | 18 of 45 answers, all 3 engines |
A seeded thread that gets removed, or an account flagged for promotion, can leave you worse off than no thread. Many subreddits use AutoModerator rules that remove posts from new, low-karma accounts before anyone sees them.
What should you do instead?
Earn the discussion. Make a video that shows the plugin solving the problem, because Google’s answers lean on YouTube. Answer questions on Reddit and forums as yourself, without the link, until people ask for it. Publish original data or a comparison you actually ran, because that is what other people link to and quote. It is slower, and it is the version Google has said it wants.
What would change my mind?
The 0.66 figure is a correlation from published research, not our measurement. Our own data is one run of 45 answers in WordPress plugin categories. We did not test a paid mention campaign, and would not.
Evidence that would move this page: a documented case where paid, disclosed-as-paid mentions produced lasting citations across several engines and several re-runs. I have not seen one.
How this was made: figures come from our own runs in the engines’ public interfaces or from the studies named above. Drafted with an AI assistant (Claude) and reviewed by Alauddin Chowdhury. Method and AI use.
